Cuttlefish are an entirely marine dwelling group. They are usually found in shallow waters and around reefs along the coasts of east and south Asia, western Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa and Australia. The common cuttlefish takes up residence in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean.
They range from waters as deep as 200 meters, but most are found within the upper 100 meters. They are typically found on the continental shelf on sandy or muddy substrates. Cuttlefish undergo seasonal migrations between inshore waters during spring and summer and medium shelf grounds during autumn and winter.
